Auto-Create forms reside in memory the entire time the program is running.Do 'available forms' load into and then out of memory automatically? DoesDelphi5 work like BP in the way BP handled overlays? In BP the size of thelargest overlay plus the execute was the minimum program required size. When I load a particularly large 'available form' in D5 and I don't get thesystem resources back after closing the form is this because Delphi has nowreset the minimum size of memory the app needs so it didn't give the memoryback? When I say I don't get the memory back this is what I mean: I enabled theMicrosoft Resource Meter to watch the memory usage of my app.
One verylarge form takes considerable resources when I load it and the resourcemeter doesn't recover when I close that large form. Thanks in AdvanceSam in California. Thanks in Advance Sam in California. Woody,Thanks for the response.Geeeeze.you would think D5 would swap memory in and out for 'availableforms' as compared to always loaded 'autocreate forms'.
I guess the onlydifference between the two is autocreate forms don't have to go through thatfirst memory load so they will respond a little faster on their first use.Having to make special memory calls for forms you want memory swapped in andout for (99% of all forms) should be done in D5 like it is done in BP7.Maybe I'm missing something here? Thanks AgainSam in California. Hi Sam,Autocreate forms are created during application initialization, as you cansee in the source of the.EXE.
Availableforms arent auto created anytime. You have to create them manually in code - just when you neeed them - andfree them afterwards. This is the best and memory safest thing to do.As mentioned by Woody - you can use the OnCLose event to free the form onclose or use the.free 'method'This whole thing has nothing to do with overlays anymore. Aditionally thereis a difference betweeen ressources and memory.
Ressources and are only'sort-of-handles', memory is - memory. WIth memory funny things can happen. For instance if you're close to using up memory and you aquire some mem andfree the same amount afterwards it may appear you have more physical memory, because windows dumped some stuff to the page file.Have FunWolfgang'Sam Hunnicutt' schrieb im Newsbeitragnews:[email protected]. I am just complaining a little becauseit seems to me to be a natural process for D5 to automatically do thecreateform and free calls for any 'available' form. I guess they decidedagainst it because they can't guarantee the form would be called modally.
Isaw some stuff in the help files that seemed to describe a routine that canbe called using the form name as a passed parameter so that the form iscreated and then freed on close. The programmer still has to make sure theform is called modally. I guess I will check that out a little further. Thanks for the response.Sam in California. Do a right click on your exe in the project manager, and choose 'ShowSource' you will see a series of Application.CreateForm calls. All theseforms are the ones that are in the auto-create field. You can use exactlythis method to create them at runtime. When a form is auto-created it is never freed (excpet you do the caFreetrick in OnClose), because you might alwqays need them again - afterall youlet it be created on startup.
This form is destroyed when your appshutsdown. This is O.K.If you have huge forms and need them just in one place it is better tocreate them yourselfs and free them afterwards.I think Borlands approach is the right one. Every form you desgin isavailable in your application and you dont need to worry about creating ordestroying it.
